There are a few memories of Diwali that will forever hold a special place in my heart. My mom lovingly filling mithai boxes for our friends, the sound of silver clinking as she cleaned her puja thalis and idols, the smell of fresh gujiya and other festive treats.
Cleaning silver was always a task that my mom took her time doing, it took an effort and time before everything was sparkling clean the way she wanted. It was also something I dreaded doing as I became an adult, until finding my go to silver cleaning method (baking soda + aluminum foil). This year, on the heels of Diwali, I’m excited to share 5 easy ways to clean silver.
1. Toothpaste
Squeeze a dime size amount of toothpaste on a cloth and rub it against the silver. Leave it for 2-3 minutes and then rinse with water. Dry throughly.
2. Baking Soda & Aluminum Foil
Bring a pot of water to a rapid boil, add in 2-3 crumpled sheets of aluminum foil, your silver items and a tablespoon of baking soda. Cover and watch the magic happen for 30-40 seconds. Remove silver items from pot and wipe down.
3. Corn Starch
Take a 1:1 ration of water and corn starch to make a paste. Rub it liberally over the silver you’re cleaning. Let it dry completely. Wash off dried mixture with water and dry completely.
Squeeze a lemon into a bowl with 3 tablespoons of salt and hot water. Place silver items in the bowl for 6-7 minutes. Remove, rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth.
