It’s usually prepared by blending yogurt with water, salt and spices until frothy and has a number of benefits such as aiding in digestion, providing calcium, vitamin D and helping with dehydration. It’s relished in hot summers because of it’s cooling properties from yogurt.

There are two categories of lassis, one is salted (namkeen) and another one is sweet (meethi). Traditional salted lassi is a savory drink, often served alongside meals, and made at home by simply whisking salt in yogurt and water. You can customize your namkeen lassi blends with different herbs and spices. The sweet/meethi ones are often blended with fruits or syrups, the most popular being the Mango Lassi. I don’t mind sweet or salty lassi where as my husband prefers salty ones. One of our favorite lassis is my Beet Mint lassi.

TIPS TO MAKE A PERFECT LASSI:

  • Use whole milk yogurt, this helps in the drinks creaminess.
  • Incorporate ice, this helps keep the lassi nice and chilled while blending and serving.
  • The combination of whole yogurt and ice is key for a frothy lassi as the fats in the dairy blended with the ice helps create a good froth.
  • Use fresh ingredients when possible. While dried mint and cilantro will work, I highly suggest using fresh ingredients for an amplified flavor.
