Learn before you Teach | 10 books for Parents on Hindu Culture

Learn before you Teach | 10 books for Parents on Hindu Culture | A collection of books on Hindu Culture and mythology that will aid in passing on faith and culture to our little ones.

As each year passes I see Little Mirchi’s curiosity pique with “why & hows” about festivals and prayers. Last year I made an effort to read a few books on Hinduism and cultural stories and in turn I discovered how much I missed reading and learning. I want to be as knowledgeable as possible while teaching my little one about our culture and faith, since it’s much more meaningful participating in traditions when you know the meaning behind them. One of the best gifts I could give her would be to recognize the power of prayer, not just the routine of it and I hope to do so by empowering her with the answers she seeks. Therefore, one of my intentions this year is to read more and grow spiritually.

I already have a ongoing list of Children’s Books on Indian Culture and Festivals but I wanted to share a few books that I as a parent have read/am planning on reading to help remind me of the stories my Nanima and Mom told me as a child. Because so many of our cultural and religious stories are passed on from generation to generation verbally in the form of stories, it’s taken some time to source these reads. If you’ve read any books that you think would be a good fit to this list, feel free to let me know and I will be happy to add it.

Disclaimer | I am open to teaching my daughter about all religions, however as we are raising her with the Hindu faith, I wanted to share some resources for other parents doing the same. I was raised in a Hindu Punjabi household where my parents taught me the teachings of both Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Hinduism, so I am sharing my finds accordingly.

The Man from the Egg | Sudha Murthy

The Mahabharata | Penguin Classics

The Book of Nanak | Navtej Sarna

The Ramayana | A New Retelling of Valmiki’s Ancient Epic

Book of Ganesha | Royina Grewal

7 Secrets of the Goddess | From the Hindu Trinity Series

Myth = Mithya | Decoding Hindu Mythology

Ramayana | The Story of Lord Rama

The Indian Culture | Why We Do?

The Serpent’s Revenge | Unusual Tales from the Mahabharata

What I love about these books is that some of them share the history behind some of our rituals, some share small stories from our larger epics while others give us a modern rendition of scriptures that we might not read today whether it’s due to size or translation.

  1. Nisha – this post is right on time for me. Have been introducing culture and religion to my girls since they are born. But sometimes it is difficult to convey Hindutva in right way.. will check out some books.
