His & Her Lassi [Cumin Mint Lassi & Cardamom Rose Lassi]

“What an enormous magnifier is tradition! How a thing grows in the human memory and in the human imagination, when love, worship, and all that lies in the human heart, is there to encourage it” -Thomas Carlyle

Sunshine smiles. This weekend the weather bug decided to surprise us with some much needed warmth and sunshine! The whole city was out and about enjoying and gearing up for Spring. The change in weather could not have come at a better time for those of us celebrating the spring time festival of Holi (as it’s primarily an outdoor celebration).

Holi is a two day spring harvest festival celebrated all throughout India. It is also known as “The Festival of Colors”. Bonfires are lit the on the eve of the festival. The second day the celebration continues by people throwing colored powder and colored water at each other. It is a joyous and festive occasion which welcomes new life and brightness in every one’s lives. Chilled ‘Bhang Lassi’ with hot crispy pakora’s are a common snack during this time. Lassi is a drink prepared by blending yogurt with water and adding salt, sugar, or spices to taste.

Last year, after Hubby Darling and I got married we wanted to make our first Holi together special and decided visit friends to share color and sweets. As the festival approached this year, we decided to make it a tradition of visiting friends and enjoying the day together.  We had a wonderful Sunday afternoon with friends with a lunch followed by a color fight! Friends are the family that you choose to make and we are blessed to be able to build our own traditions and memories of holidays and customs together. After celebrating, we all headed home for some much needed rest! We were pretty tired once we got home and since the sun was out and about I decided to make some refreshing and cold Lassi. After all… what’s Holi without Lassi?

HD likes ‘Namkeen Lassi’ (salty lassi) and I prefer ‘Meethi Lassi’ (sweet lassi). For the salty lassi I used a combination of mint, salt, roasted ground cumin and black pepper. For the sweet lassi I used sugar, rose water, and cardamon powder.

    1. Hi Jessica! Yep Salty Lassi is a very common ‘Summer drink’ in India. The yellow, red, and blue powder are the colored powders that are used during the Festival of Holi. People celebrate by throwing colored powder on each other, colored water balloons, water guns… it’s quite a sight to see! 🙂
