Growing up I watched my Mom light a diya every morning to start the day with positivity and close the day by lighting a diya to give thanks for our daily blessings. It became such a peaceful start to the day that after getting married I wanted to continue the same tradition.

Ghee Diya

Diya’s are lit by families to purify their homes and their hearts. Worship is always commenced with the lighting of a lamp. Pure cotton is rolled into a wick, immersed in ghee, creating a candle when lit. The diya (also called a jyot or batti) can be placed in a little earthen bowl made of clay or in an elaborately decorated silver or brass holder. Ghee is favored to oil as it represents the purest form, nothing mixed or altered to create it.

Fresh Diyas

Making fresh ghee diyas in the mornings can be messy and time consuming. A few years ago I visited a friends house and at puja time she opened a small tin box that was filled with diyas that were soaked in ghee. She explained to me that her mom would make her a small box every month because she knew how busy her daughter was and may not get time to make a proper ghee diya every morning. I fell in love with that idea and have now started doing the same at home.

DIPPING METHOD

  1. Warm up your solidified ghee until it’s liquid.
  2. Pack and arrange your cotton wicks in a row in the airtight container.
  3. One by one, hold each cotton wick by the very top of the wick and submerge in ghee. Wait about 30 seconds and return to the container.
  4. Repeat this step one more time once all the wicks have been dipped; you want to submerge them in ghee at least 2-3 times.
  5. With a spoon, take some ghee and drizzle it over all the diyas making sure even the tips of the wicks are covered in ghee.
  6. Store in an airtight container and use as needed.
  7. These presoaked dipped ghee diyas have a burning time of approximately 10-12 minutes. If you want it to last longer, use the silicone mold method below.

  1. Namaste. Thank you so much. We light diya daily here in York, U.K. and though I usually buy them pre-made, I accidentally bought some plain pure cotton wicks instead this time! When I researched how to turn them into diya we can actually light, I found your website.
Using this recipe, I’m about to make some with my son. Most grateful. I’ll be checking out your other recipes too. Thanks again!
