DIY: Homemade Edible Finger Paint

DIY: Homemade Edible Finger Paint

As I mentioned in my Thandai recipe post, the festival of Holi is approaching and I wanted to make Little Mirchi’s first Holi especially memorable.  I knew that we couldn’t play with traditional powdered color as everything is going in her mouth of late. When I looked up finger paints for children, all the caution labels read not for children under 4.  I finally decided on making our own paint at home so I knew exactly what it was made of and there would be no issues if she did decide to give it a taste.

The below is the super easy and quick method of making homemade baby safe edible paint.

Mix dry ingredients together & add water.

Divide equally into bowls and add desired amount of food coloring.

If I knew it would be this easy, I would have made it a while back. The cleanup was quick and simple as I set up her “canvas” on a disposable white plastic tablecloth. Once she (we) were done playing, I just tossed the tablecloth. We also decided to make a family art piece – to remember her first Holi and her first time playing with “paint”!

    1. Hi there, since they are just flour and food color I would think you could keep them for a few weeks as long as you store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

I haven’t kept them more than a week since it’s so easy to make them quickly.

    2. This looks great! I’m so excited to try this! Does this need to be used the day you make it or could it be made in advance/saved for another day?

      1. cover and refrigerate and use the next day, you may been to add some more water to it the next day

  1. What kind of food coloring do you use? I definitely need WAY more food coloring to come anywhere close to your colors.
