Diwali is my favorite time of year. Diwali, popularly known as the “festival of lights,” is the start of a new year; a time to reset, reflect and let light conquer darkness. I thoroughly look forward to the celebrations, get togethers, dinner parties and prayers that make up this special time of year.

The weeks leading up to Diwali we start preparing for the holiday by reading books, baking treats for friends and decorating the house. Essentially, I make the countdown to Diwali a part of our everyday, so our little one can feel the excitement build up.

The evening before Diwali we light a diya, an oil candle to commence the start of Diwali.

The morning of is filled with excitement as we decorate our doorstep with rangoli designs. We have a prayer in the evening, which is followed by dinner and friends coming over to celebrate. Our finale at night is with sparklers and fireworks. Little Mirchi looks forward to this part the most!
